Inside Second Stitch, where old blankets become jackets

In a Bristol studio, a team of four takes apart kilims, blankets and worn-out jeans and sews them into pieces no one else will ever have.

Every Monday, the Second Stitch studio sorts what came in over the week: blankets from house clearances, kilims too worn for the floor, jeans with holes in the knees.

One piece, one pattern

Nothing is cut from a roll. Each blanket is laid flat, its border and its flaws marked in chalk, and the pattern is placed around them. That is why no two jackets are alike.

Visible repairs

Where a jean is worn through, the team patches it with printed cotton and leaves the stitches showing. A repair is part of the story, not something to hide.
